Our Story & How We Grow
That Green House came about as a “side hustle” in the spring of 2020 when it became clear that we would be spending our weekends at home. We are a family of three - Abby, Nobby, and 6-year-old Elise. We bought our property in 2011 and put up our hoophouse and first garden beds the same year. We’ve renovated or added garden beds throughout the property, starting with our “butterfly garden” that supplies many of the root divisions for the stand.
We are dedicated to using organic methods and generally avoid insecticides, even organic. We prefer to be choosy with varieties, practice companion planting and hand-pick bugs as necessary. We sit on a bed of grey maritime clay that easily floods and stays soggy late into spring. We use raised beds that allow us to start long before we could if we were growing in the ground. We use “no till” and regenerative techniques, adapted for our raised beds.
In recent years, most of New England has seen an invasion of Amynthas invasive jumping worms. In response, we’ve moved away from selling plants in soil that may be contaminated with worms or cocoons. That Green House plants are grown and sold in commercial potting mix (Lambert LM-AP) that is procured from Griffen Greenhouse Supply and stored indoors. We amend with Coast of Maine lobster compost (a commercial thermophilic compost). Finished plants are stored off the ground and pots are thoroughly washed before use.
We add an OMRI-certified, slow release, organic fertilizer (Harmony Ag 5-4-3) to our growing medium. We feed with fish emulsion from Neptune’s Harvest (Gloucester, Mass.). Most of our vegetable seeds are sourced from FedCo Seeds, a cooperative; or Johnny’s Selected Seeds, an employee-owned company. Both are in Maine and specialize in seeds for Northern growing. We use GeoSeeds, a small company in South Carolina, for our cut flower seeds because the varieties they offer are unmatched. Since 2023, we use certified organic seed whenever possible.
We are licensed under the State of New Hampshire Nursery/Plant Dealer Licensing Program to sell nursery stock.
